Ghana is a constitutional democracy headed by an executive president and a vice president who are both elected by popular vote for a maximum of two four-year terms. The president is both chief of state and head of government. Ghana's unicameral legislature consists of a Parliament with 275 members who are elected by universal suffrage every four years. A new Constitution based on the U.S. model was approved by referendum in April 1992 and implemented the following year.
