The S1000 submarine program, still being developed, is a joint effort between the Italian firm Fincantieri and the Russian Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering. The submarine will combine technologies from the Russian Amur 950-class submarine and Italy's 212-type design. However, the air-independent propulsion (AIP) system will not be the same one licensed for the U-212 class because Germany has export restrictions on HDW's AIP design.
