This class was purchased by Abu Dhabi specifically for the defense of the Sultan 's palace and are not part of the regular United Arab Emirate naval forces. They were placed in service in 1986. Since 1987, the Boghammar patrol boat design has become notorious throughout the Persian Gulf because of i ts use by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
