The XBT is an expendable bathythermographic device used by submarines and surface ships to obtain information about ocean temperatures at various depths.
The probe is launched from a through-hull or deck-mounted launcher; as it descends, the communication wire unreels from both the probe and the launcher, allowing measurements to be made in any sea state and at ship speeds of up to 30 knots.
