The SSQ-963 is an active A-size sonobuoy used to find the range, direction and speed of submarines. The direction is determined by use of a transmitting acoustic projector and a receiving hydrophone array.
The depth of the hydrophone and projector can be adjusted by radio command from the aircraft. The antenna remains at the surface to transmit information to a processor on the aircraft through a 31-channel radio telemetry link.
