The SSQ-947B is an active, omni-directional sonobuoy intended to find the bearing of a submarine after it has been detected by a passive sonobuoy. The system is based on the U.S. SSQ-47 sonobuoy (see separate database entry).

After entering the water, the transmitting antenna and stabilizing device pop out and remain at the surface while the hydrophone drops to a predetermined depth of 60 feet (18 m) or 800 feet (244 m). The sonobuoy is battery-operated, activated by contact...
