AN/SSQ-53 DIFAR

The AN/SSQ-53 Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy is an active, directional sonobuoy used by ASW/patrol fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. After initial passive detection of a target is made, the SSQ-53 is employed to use active echo ranging to determine a target's exact bearing. The D(2) version is the current primary sonobuoy of the U.S. Navy.
