Type 170

The Type 170 is an outdated, hull-mounted, high-frequency attack sonar with a range of 8,200 feet (2,500 meters). This "searchlight" sonar is used in conjunction with a fire-control system to direct anti-submarine torpedoes and depth charges to their targets.

Development began in 1948. This was followed by sea trials in 1954 and initial operational capability (IOC) in 1955 in BLACKWOOD-class anti-submarine warfare frigates of the Royal Navy. The sonar is no longer in production;...
