Orion side-scan sonar

The Orion is a towed side-scan sonar in service with the U.S. Navy for deepwater search missions. The system is capable of operating at depths of 20,000 ft (6,100 m).

The Orion is a dual-frequency (57 kHz/240 kHz) two-body towed side-scan sonar system. The sonar is mounted in a neutrally buoyant tow body that trails behind the weighted umbilical depressor. This protects the sonar for vessel surface motions, improving stability and the quality of collected data.
