The HS 12 is an active/passive helicopter dipping sonar. The sonar is lowered from a hydraulic winch on board the helicopter; it has a 991-foot (302-m) cable.
Twelve preformed beams are used by the sonar, resulting in coverage in 30-degree sectors with a range of approximately 6.2 miles (10 km). Selectable CW mode, Doppler, FM processing or sector mode are available.
Initial operational capability (IOC) was reached around 1986. The sonar is in service.
