The AN/SQS-23 was a direct-path, active sonar with a range of some 10,000 yards, intended to be compatible with the anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) weapon.
Most ships had the SQS-23 sonar dome fitted under the hull, in the standard position of hull-mounted sonars. However, five CHARLES F. ADAMS-class (DDG 20-24) had bow-mounted SQS-23 domes. Moving the sonar forward to the bow had the advantage of placing the sonar as far as possible from own-ship mac hinery and propeller...
