The Italian MM/SPQ-2 series of I/J-band radars are used for air search, surface search and navigation. The system uses a single antenna to achieve this versatility by manipulating the transmission and reception.

The SPQ-2 transmitter emits long and short pulses according to a "time-sharing" method. The long pulses yield higher peak power and longer range for surface and air search; the short pulses increase resolution at shorter range.
