The AN/SPS-40 is a family of air-search and shipboard surveillance radars developed from the AN/SPS-31.
They have been in U.S. service since 1961. The Lockheed-developed family was replaced by an improved version, designated the SPS-40A, which in turn was replaced by the SPS-40B. Most of the SPS-40 systems now in use are SPS-40D radars; these radars, similar to the SPS-40Cs, are fully solid-state ver sions.
