This acoustic torpedo countermeasure (ATC) system consists of a towed decoy that generates and transmits a strong acoustic signal that is interpreted by an attacking torpedo as an actual target. The decoy operates totally independently of all ship systems. It is towed submerged behind the ship afte r being launched. Because the decoy is so small, an attacking torpedo is unable to hit it; rather, the torpedo circles the decoy as long as the battery for the countermeasure...
