The AN/WLR-9 is the first of a series of acoustic intercept receivers (AIR) for submarines. All of these systems consist of hydrophones mounted in two domes, one of which is in the submarine's sail, a receiver/processor, and display.
The system analyses intercepted sonar signals to classify according to frequency and pulse duration as well as signal level and relative bearing. The current versions are automatic.
