The SLQ-32 is the U.S. Navy's principal electronic countermeasures (ECM) and electronic support measures (ESM) system for surface ships. After several modifications and more than 20 years in service, the system is being upgraded and ultimately replaced by the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) begun in 2002. (See "Variants," below, for more information).
