The ALE-39 is an aircraft-carried internally mounted, expendable countermeasures dispenser system used to protect tactical aircraft from ground- and air-launched missile threats and radar-directed antiaircraft guns. It is a replacement for the ALE-29.
The dispenser holds 60 cartridges, which can be chaff, flares (for infrared [IR] countermeasures) or Prime Oscillator Expendable Transponders (POETs).
