The AN/APG-68 radar is derived from the AN/APG-66 , but it is substantially improved, making it capable of supporting the AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM ).

Improvements include a grided, multiple peak power traveling-wave-tube (TWT) transmitter and programmable signal process or programmed in Jovial J73 and possessing a block-oriented, random-access 386K-word non-volatile memory.
