The Pershing family grew from a program in the 1950s that was a result of the U.S. Army's desire to field a tactical nuclear missile replacement for the Redstone rocket. The program resulted in short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs and MRBMs) that were in service for almost 30 years. All Pershing missiles were withdrawn from service and destroyed by 1991 as required by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia.
