The Shigella germ is a family of enteric bacteria that can cause diarrhea in humans. They are microscopic living organisms that thrive in human intestines and are spread through person-to-person contact. Japanese scientist Kiyoshi Shiga, for whom they are named, discovered shigella over 1 00 years ago.
