Salmonella typhi is the cause of the systemic febrile illness typhoid fever. S. typhi, as opposed to the other species of Salmonella, has no animal reservoir. It is strictly a human pathogen and is spread by the fecal-oral route by asymptomatic carriers. Currently, there are 107 known strains of th e bacteria. S. typhi is a facultative anaerobic, gram-negative rod and is part of the Enterobacteriaceae family.
