Burkholderia psuedomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis (also called Whitmore's disease) in humans and animals. Melioidosis is clinically and pathologically similar to glanders disease, but the ecology and epidemiology of melioidosis are different. It is also known as Nightcliff garderner's disease after the suburb of Darwin, Australia, where the disease is endemic.
