The equine encephalomyelitis viruses consist of three antigenically related viruses within the Alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae: Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE), Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE). These viruses are vectored in nature by various species of mosquitoes and cause periodic epizootics among equines.
