Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic gram positive spore former that grows well in the absence of oxygen and produces spores resistant to adverse conditions.
Since C. perfringens is a natural inhabitant of the human intestine as well as most other animals, it is not hard to obtain. It also is one of the most common agents of food poisonings, frequently spoiling foods such as turkey and other fowl as well as any rich food it contaminates.
