The MDS-1 is a self-propelled, mobile bottom mine laid by submarines.

While the mine resembles a torpedo with contra-rotating propellers, it is driven by a propulsion plant originally designed for a torpedo.

The MDS-1 utilizes an influence sensor, and can be deployed in water more than 26 ft (8 m) deep.
