The R-1 was a moored, shallow-water, small influence mine fired by two chemical horns. It could be laid at depths from 3.5-115 ft (1-35 m) and had a case depth of 1.5-5 ft. (0.4-1.5 m). Minimum spacing was 66-ft (16 m). In very shallow water the mine stayed connected to the anchor chain.
"R" was the U.S. designation. The Soviet/Russian designation was unknown ("R" stands for "Russian unknown").
