The Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system is half of the Midcourse Defense Segment (MDS) of the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). It is paired with the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (formerly the Sea-Based Midcourse Defense) system to defend against ballistic missiles in the midcourse phase.
