The Poseidon submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was derived from the earlier Polaris SLBM. It was the first strategic missile of any nation to carry a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) warhead, greatly increasing its strike capability. The Poseidon could carry up to 14 RVs, though typically it was loaded out with 10. The RVs could be directed to specific targets within range of the warhead's "footprint."
