The SS-9 Scarp, or R-36 (8K67), was the world's largest missile when it was deployed in 1967. Powered by storable liquid fuel, the Scarp was hot-launched from underground silos. Most of the 288 deployed carried a single 20- to 25-megaton warhead.
The two-stage ballistic missile was equipped with a single warhead carrying heavy re-entry vehicles and decoy dispenser to penetrate enemy anti-missile defenses.
