The 16-tubed BM-22 (formerly known as the BM-27) was deployed to launch 220-mm rockets to provide long-range fire support at both the front and army levels of the Soviet/Russian ground forces.
Under the Soviet army, a rocket launcher regiment or brigade at the army level typically had three battalions of 18 launch vehicles for a total of 54 launchers.
