The EX-171 was a development program by Raytheon [RTNA/RTNB], part of a $2.1 billion program to design, test and field a long-range munition to be fired from the Navy's new 5-inch gun (the Mk 45 Mod 4/62-caliber) gun. The EX-171 was rocket-assisted "projectile" measuring 5 inches in diameter, 5 feet in length and weighing 110 pounds, and carrying a 19-pound payload of 72 Army XM-80 anti-material/anti-personnel submunitions.
