This was an improved version of the BM 400 cluster bomb originally developed in the early 1980s. CASCAD was an acronym for close air support cargo dispenser.
The weapon was designed as an air-launched freefall weapon for low-level attacks against widely dispersed targets, while being less expensive than a traditional cluster bomb. It was designed for deployment by aircraft using high-g maneuvers in the battle area.
