The Type 80 is a "fire-and-forget" weapon – similar in this regard to the French Exocet and U.S. Harpoon missiles.
The missile is a thick cylinder with a blunt nose and a cruciform delta wing indexed in line with cruciform tail fins.
The missile flies on inertial guidance and sea-skims all the way into the target.
The Type 80 proved to be a reliable design and other missiles were developed based upon it, including the Type 88 SSM, Type 90 SSM, Type 91 and Type 93 ASMs.
