The Space-Based Laser (SBL) has been a key component of the boost defense segment (BDS) of the Missile Defense Agency's Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). It was designed to use a high-energy laser (HEL) to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles during their boost phase following lift-off. SBL was a satellite-based system designed to provide global, 24-hour ballistic missile defense.
