This is the oldest Soviet/Russian-built air-to-air missile (AAM) in service. The AA-2 Atoll had an infrared (IR) seeker in the early versions and a semi-active radar (SAR) homing variant.
The missiles strongly resembles early U.S. Sidewinder AAMs. It has a cylindrical body with cruciform triangular foreplanes indexed in line with cruciform trapezoidal rear control surfaces. The Atoll has blunt nose, while the Advanced Atoll has a pointed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) seeker nose....
