The M16 is a "Bouncing Betty" type mine that bounds almost 4 feet (1.2 m) into the air on activation. Metal fragments disperse over 360 degrees at a range of up to 100 ft (30 m). Its casing is an olive green cylinder.
The M16 consists of three parts: a mine fuze; propelling charge to lift the mine; and a projectile contained in a cast-iron casing. The fuze extends through the center of the mine to the bottom, where the propelling charge is located.
