The South African Olifant Mk 1B was developed from the indigenous Olifant Mk 1A, which is a locally modified British Centurion tank. The Mk 1B was a complete rebuild and significantly enhanced the basic design's mobility and protection.
The layout of the Mk 1A and Mk 1B are virtually the same as the Centurion. The driver sits at the front right of the hull; a three-person turret is in the center; and the powerpack is at the rear.
