The K1 or Type 88 main battle tank (MBT) was the first tank to be series produced in South Korea. It was previously known as the XK-1 Republic of Korea Indigenous Tank (ROKIT).
Prototypes were designed and built in the United States by the General Dynamics Land Systems Division using some of the technology of the U.S. M1 Abrams. However, in the production stage, the Koreans introduced several advanced components that were still in planning phases for the Abrams.
