The M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicle (ARV) represents several significant changes over its predecessor, the M88 (see separate record), making it effectively a different design with expanded capabilities. The M88A2 Hercules was previously designated the M88 Improved Recovery Vehicle (IRV).
As with the M88, the Hercules is based on the M60 main battle tank chassis. Unlike the M88, however, one Hercules can recover a M1A2 main battle tank.
