The Palletized Load System (PLS) was developed to simplify the handling of bulk resupply from rear areas to near the battlefield. The 16.5-ton PLS can be airlifted in a C-17 cargo aircraft.
The tractor vehicle is based on the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Transport (HEMTT), and can carry one demountable cargo bed called a "flatrack" while towing a trailer loaded with a second.
