The M551 was developed to provide heavy firepower in a light, air-droppable armored reconnaissance vehicle. The aluminum-hulled Sheridan had an unusual main armament consisting of the M81 152-mm gun/missile launcher. The weapon fired conventional combustible-case ammunition and the MGM-51 Shillelag h anti-tank missile. The missile has semi-active command to line of sight (SACLOS) guidance using a two-way infrared (IR) link.
