Originally projected by Berliet as a candidate for the French army's wheeled armored personnel carrier (APC), the 4 x 4 VXB-170 (initially the BL-12) lost a competition with the Renault VAB.
Since Berliet was soon absorbed by Renault, production was limited to an earlier order of 155 for the French Gendarmerie and small export orders to Gabon and Senegal.
