The German Marder infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is one of the largest and heaviest in service in any country. The similar and contemporary Soviet BMP-1 weighed only half as much as the Marder. The Marder was also one of the first designs to transcend the traditional lightly armed and armored "battle taxi" and is more properly described as an armored infantry fighting vehicle rather than an armored personnel carrier (APC).
