An upgraded BTR-60, the 8 x 8 BTR-70 was first seen in November 1980. Although it has the same boat-like hull as the BTR-60, the BTR-70 has a wider nose, a larger gap between the second and third axles with low-set side hatches in the hull, and an altered trim board.
It is driven by more powerful engines and enjoys better armor protection, but serves the same APC and infantry command vehicle functions as does the BTR-60.
