The BTR-40 4 x 4 armored personnel carrier was based on the GAZ-63 small truck. It was introduced into Soviet service soon after World War II.
The APC has vertical sides and rear, with an angled front hull. The driver and commander sit in the center of the hull and have armored windscreens and side doors.
The basic BTR-40 has an open-top troop compartment and twin rear doors. Main armament of the BTR-40 is a 7.62-mm machine gun.
