The Akash (Hindi and Sanskrit for "sky") is a surface-to-air (SAM) missile system intended for medium-range theater defense. The system consists of the Akash missile launcher mounted on a BMP-1 chassis and the Rajendra surveillance and engagement radar. It is part of the Indian Defense Development and Research Organization's (DRDO) Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP).
