The Cheongung medium-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM), also referred to as the KM-SAM, system has been designed to replace aging MIM-23 Hawk batteries in South Korea.
The South Korean Agency for Defense Development (ADD) developed the system with Russian technical assistance. The air defense system is based on Russia's SA-21 Growler (S-400), particularly the 9M96 missile.
South Korea may also seek to export the weapon system.
