description
The AN/AQS-13 active helicopter-carried "dipping" sonar is the most widely used dipping sonar in the West. The sonar transducer is lowered into the water from a hovering helicopter.
The AQS-13 was developed from the earlier AQS-10 dipping sonar.
Data gathered by the sonar include bathythermal (depth-versus-temperature) information down to 450 ft (137 m), passive acoustic monitoring and active echo determination of range and bearing.
