The 85-mm Type 56 field gun is based on the Soviet divisional D-44 gun (see separate record for more information). China received a number of those during the Korean War (1950-1953).
One of this gun’s major differences from the D-44 is a modified firing mechanism that uses a push rod in the center of the elevating handwheel.
The Type 56 fires high-explosive (HE), fin-stabilized HE anti-tank (HEAT-FS) and high-explosive squash head (HESH) ammunition.
