When in service, the 85-mm M52 field gun was similar to the Russian D-44 and could fire the same ammunition. The M52 is heavier than the D-44 and has a longer barrel. The barrel has a smooth taper from the breech to the barrel diameter; the D-44 has a more abrupt break.
The M52 is based on a conventional split-trail carriage, which is fitted with a caster wheel to assist in bringing the weapon into action.
